THE ACTIVITIES
As a non-denominational and non-governmental cultural center, Hungarian House provides opportunities for its members and their friends to learn about Hungarian history, literature, geography, the language and the arts as well as current developments in that country. It serves new arrivals as a bridge to American society, its customs and traditions. The center is also a place for gatherings of a social nature.
The lectures, concerts, exhibits, stage performances, receptions, and social events are sponsored by the various affiliated organizations. Some of the functions are in English, others are in Hungarian. The speakers are recognized experts in their fields, coming from within the US or from abroad, often from Hungary. Occasionally, the center offers retrospectives of Hungarian films or presentations of genuine Hungarian folk dance.
The building houses a permanent Hungarian reference and lending library. The holdings contain documents, some of historical significance, pertaining of activities of prominent Hungarian immigrants. Original Hungarian paintings and samples of rare Herend porcelain round out the collection.
